5 Techniques for Working from Home - Part 1: Routine is Key!

Updated: Jul 8, 2020

For many of us, working from home is our new normal, although it might be a long ways off from normal-normal. If your work life has shifted from days spent in an office to working from your new home office, we’ve rounded up some tips that will help to ensure a productive day.

In this blog series, 5 Techniques for Working from Home, we share some strategies to make your work-from-home life a little more normal.

Set a routine and stick to it.

A great morning routine is key to a successful day, and this is no different when you’re working from home. Follow these steps to start your day on the right foot:

  1. Set an alarm - get up at the same time each day as if you were going into the office. This will help you to avoid staying in bed until one minute before your first meeting…

  2. Shower and get dressed - before you do anything (including checking emails and social media), get out of bed, and jump in the shower, then get dressed in clothes (not “daytime pajamas”). Looking your best will contribute to feeling your best.

  3. Eat breakfast - even if it’s just a cup of coffee and an apple, eating something will jump start your metabolism and your brain!

  4. Chores - set aside some time before you begin work to do housework. It’s unreal how distracting a messy kitchen is when you’re trying to focus. Take care of the household items that will be the most distracting for you to significantly increase your productivity.

  5. Set goals - make a small list of things you want to accomplish each day - for work and otherwise. This will keep you on track and limit the time spent deciding how to allocate your time throughout the day.

These five items are a solid foundation for your morning routine. If there are other things that you consider an essential part of your morning routine, add them to the list and get all of your days spent working from home off to a great start!
